How to give extra Screen Time that carries over to the next day?

This workaround is ideal if you don’t want your child's earned time to be lost if they go to bed before using it all.

By using tokens only (and removing daily free time), any unused screen time will automatically carry over to the next day.

Step 1: Set Daily Free Time to Zero

Free time resets every day and does not carry over.

To ensure no earned time is lost, remove daily free time completely.

  • Open the Parent Dashboard
  • Select your child’s profile > User Settings
  • Set Daily Free Time = 0

This ensures all screen time comes from tokens.

Step 2: Use Tokens as the Only Source of Screen Time

Tokens automatically convert into screen time once free time runs out - and unused tokens always carry over.

  • Set Minutes per Token (for example, 10 minutes per token) - (Under User settings of the child)
  • Your child earns tokens from chores (inside or outside ScreenCoach)
  • Tokens remain available until they are used

Step 3: Add Tokens Manually or on a Schedule

Add tokens when your child earns screen time.

Manual deposits

  • Go to Transactions tab in the bottom bar of ScreenCoach App
  • Select Deposit Tokens
  • Choose your child
  • Enter the number of tokens and save

Scheduled deposits

  • Create a transaction
  • Set it to repeat daily or weekly
  • Tokens will be added automatically

Step 4: Set Up Modes Correctly (Required for Tokens to Work)

Tokens only convert into usable screen time when a Mode allows device access.

Modes control when the device can be used and tokens do not override them.

Key Mode setup principles

  • A single Mode can have multiple access times
  • You do not need separate Modes for each day
  • Modes with no access times will block all screen time
  • Modes restricted to certain days (for example, weekend-only Modes) cannot be used outside those days

Recommended Mode setup

  1. Open Settings > Modes in the Parent Dashboard
  2. Select an existing Mode or create a new one (for example, “School Day”)
  3. Add multiple access times within the same Mode:
    • Morning (before school)
    • Afternoon or evening (after school)
  1. Enable the Mode for the appropriate days of the week
  2. Create a separate Mode for weekends (for example, “Weekend Fun”) with longer access times
  3. Ensure your child is using a Mode that is allowed on the current day

If your child selects a Mode that isn’t allowed that day, they will have tokens available but no usable screen time.

Step 5: Let Tokens Carry Over Automatically

With this setup:

  • All screen time comes from tokens
  • Unused tokens carry over to the next day
  • Earned time is never lost if your child stops early or goes to bed

This workaround allows you to:

  • Add extra screen time after chores are completed
  • Preserve all earned time
  • Avoid losing screen time due to daily resets
  • Keep screen time fully reward-based
