Android Battery Settings - To prevent ScreenCoach from not being run in the background / Accessibility turning off by itself

For child-managed devices, ScreenCoach needs to be running all the time in the background. If it’s not running (with app blocking enabled), apps will be blocked.

To make sure ScreenCoach doesn’t stop running in the background, keep reading!

Some Android versions try to stop background programs and processes to save battery.

3 things to look try to Fix Android stopping background programs:

Check the battery settings (below) and then make sure there’s enough free storage space on the device. If the free storage is really low, your device will work extra hard and might try to stop background programs & processes to save power
Disable or uninstall any other screen time management systems (some can run together, okay but turn off while problem-solving)
Check the battery settings (read on)

Note: To access the Android settings on a child device, you’ll need to switch to be a parent user on that device.

We need to change any settings that might stop Screencoach from running in the background. As each version of Android can vary slightly depending on the manufacturer, these are the battery settings for Samsung.

How to turn off/disable Apple Screen Time on iOS (ScreenTime conflicts)

Settings and restrictions in Apple Screen Time will conflict with ScreenCoach and will not let the app work properly.

| So here are the steps to turn the options in Apple Screen Time off:

Go to Settings (iOS settings) on parent device
Tap on Family
Tap on your child's profile
Go to ScreenTime (See image below)
Make sure no apps are set to Always Allowed
Remove any Downtime settings
Remove any App Limits
Scroll down (the the very bottom) and tap on "Turn off App & Website Activity"

||| NOTE:

Due to a bug in the Apple Screen Time.
If you had any options enabled in steps 5-7 and you have turned off screen time before, then these options are still remembered/active in the background!

So you will need to re-enable Apple screen time then remove disable options 5-7 and then disable Apple Screen Time ( "Turn off App & Website Activity") again.

Turning off Apple Screen Time completely is optional. You can make the above changes, then Turn it off (scroll to the very bottom)

Setting up an Apple Family

Apple Family makes it easy to enable ScreenCoach's features to work correctly.

📱 Set Up Apple Family on iPhone or iPad (iOS 16 or later)

Open the Settings app.
Tap your name at the top.
Tap Family (or Family Sharing), then tap Set Up Your Family.
Follow the on-screen instructions to:
- Set up your family group
- Invite family members to join

💻 Set Up Family on Mac (macOS Ventura or later)

Click the Apple menu  > System Settings.
Click your name, then click Family (or Family Sharing).
Click Set Up Family.
Follow the on-screen instructions to:
- Create your family group
- Invite others to join

You can invite others right away during setup, or add members later through Messages, email, or directly on the device. Tip: You can invite multiple Apple IDs that you own to share purchases across accounts.

On iPhone or iPad:

Open the Settings app, then tap Family.
Tap Add Member.
Choose one of the following:
- Create an Account for a Child – if your child doesn’t have an Apple ID
- Invite People – if they already have an Apple ID
The invited person can enter their Apple ID password directly on your device to join.
Follow the prompts to set up features like Parental Controls, Location Sharing, and more.

On Mac:

Setting up App Blocking with ScreenCoach on iOS - The Complete Guide

Before downloading SC. First step is to make sure the child device is logged in with a child Apple ID. NOTE that some parents give their old iPads to their children and do not set up a new Apple ID, this may allow them to bypass ScreenCoach.

||| If you still want to keep a parent or adult Apple ID logged in to your child's device, you can follow this article to make sure they do not bypass ScreenCoach. We still recommended have a separate, child Apple ID set up for the child.

If your child device is already set up with a Child Apple ID, you can skip Step 1.

| Step 1: Create a child account for the device: (Apple ID)

On your parent device, go to Settings > Tap on your Apple Family on the top and tap on the + icon on the top right
Tap on Create Child Account
Enter the child's full name and date of birth.
It will stay as a child account until the child is 13.
It will ask you to verify yourself as an adult first with your Apple email.
And then you can start to create the Apple ID for the child with email, you may need a phone number to verify this child account later.

It is MUCH better to make sure the device is part of an Apple family before downloading the app.

How to Link a Device to your ScreenCoach Account with QR Code

|| To manage a device with ScreenCoach, you need to link the device to your ScreenCoach account.

Here is how you do it.

Click on “Account – Sign in.”
You will see a screen like this the image below.
For a quicker login, you can use the the QR Code option below the sign-in form and scan it using the Parent device.

Note: You can also login with your ScreenCoach credentials or you can use Google/Apple credentials (under the same email address you signed up for ScreenCoach with).

You’ll now see a screen like this with a QR Code & a Pairing Code (5 digit Alpha-numeric Code):

Open the camera on your Parent Device & Scan the QR Code displayed on the new device.
This will auto-launch ScreenCoach app and will link the new device.

If the above step does not work for any reason, follow this:

Open ScreenCoach parent app on your phone or tablet.
Tap “Settings” from the bottom tab bar.

How to Block/Allow apps on Mac and Windows PC?

|| The ScreenCoach app for Mac & Windows can block apps!

When not allowed to use the device, all apps are blocked* You can choose which apps are allowed to be used in different modes; for example, you can block apps like Minecraft & steam in homework/school mode! Please note this does not yet include websites like Netflix and games that run inside web browsers.

*When we talk about blocking all apps on Mac & Windows, our App sits in front and doesn't let you get past it, any background apps will continue to run so any downloads will continue to download and any music that may be playing can be listened to.

If you have a mode that restricts access to some apps, if a child switches to a disallowed app or launches a disallowed app, the app will quit automatically.

Ensure that the Mac/Windows app is already installed and linked to your family account and has run for at least a few minutes, so it has time to load all of its app to your cloud account

Add apps into app categories
Use the app categories in the modes to block your chosen app categories
eg: block games & social media apps
